Who is eligible for the program?
If you plan to apply for these benefits, you must be a veteran, a widow, or the child of a deceased veteran. Only veterans and family members of veterans who did not receive a dishonorable discharge will be eligible.
In addition, it is necessary to meet the income and equity limits defined annually. In 2022, the maximum equity limit accepted was $138,489.
Another criterion is that the veteran in question has served in the armed forces on at least one of the following dates for the following periods:
- At least 90 days from September 8, 1980;
- At least 24 months or full enlistment (with some exceptions) as a private, beginning September 7, 1980;
- Active duty as an officer, effective October 16, 1981, with no prior 24 months of service;
- Have served in one of the designated war periods.
In addition, widows and veterans must meet at least one of the criteria below:
- Be at least 65 years old;
- Possess permanent and total disability;
- Being hospitalized in a nursing home due to disability;
- Receive Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplementary Pension Income.
In turn, children of veterans are eligible if they meet one of the criteria below:
- Be under the age of 18;
- Be under the age of 23 and attend a VA-approved school;
- Have a disability that prevents you from looking after yourself before age 18.

What documents do you need to provide?
Indeed, to apply for this pension, you must present the following documents:
- Social Security number or VA file number (required);
- Military history (required);
- Financial information—and your dependents’ financial information (required);
- Bank account direct deposit information;
- Medical information.
People over 65 years old must also present the following documents:
- Your work history;
- Any medical evidence that supports your claim.
