Disability Grant, a federal project that gives people the right to have a continuous pension to cover their own needs

Receiving a diagnosis of disabling mental or physical disability is an extremely traumatic experience. Therefore, a family or person who receives this type of news deserves all the support necessary to have food and meet their basic needs, whether the disability is reversible or not. Thus, the federal government created the Disability Grant, a financial pension of up to $1,990 to guarantee quality of life for those who cannot work indefinitely or permanently. Anyone can apply for this aid: South African citizens, nationals or refugees aged between 18 and 59 years old (or even younger).

The law that governs this program defines the basic procedures defined so that those who do not have a national identification document can apply for the Disability Grant. If this is the case for you, you must: complete an affidavit in standard SASSA format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths indicating that you do not have such document and submit this document along with an affidavit signed by a reputable person (such as a , traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion or school principal) testifying your name and age. After applying for the pension, you will be referred to the Department of Internal Affairs to request the identity document.

Periodically, SASSA will define dates on which your situation will be reassessed by the professionals of that organization. Up to 3 months before the date, you will be informed about the time and place where this review will take place. In case of bedridden patient or unable to move, home visits will be scheduled. These may include an interview, medical examination and request for documents to verify that you still meet the eligibility requirements for this project. After each review, you will receive a receipt and must keep it. If you choose not to participate in these reviews, your pension will be suspended. My order received a negative opinion.

If your claim for Disability Benefit is not accepted, you will receive a written justification issued by SASSA. If you do not agree with the justification, you can request reconsideration to SASSA or appeal to the Minister of Social Development, sending a written request for revision. You have a period of up to 90 days after receiving the result to carry out this process. After that period, your request will be ignored.
