The twentieth century was marked by wars that changed the course of history. In these events, many South African soldiers were willing to fight in defense of national interests and in pursuit of peace. The War Veteran’s Grant is a way of saying “thank you” to these brave warriors. This is a pension of R2,000 paid monthly for an indefinite period to veterans who meet the income requirements defined in this program.

War Veteran’s Grant was created exclusively to help low-income South African war veterans. In this way, only the veterans themselves or someone authorized by them can apply for this financial aid. In addition, the pension ceases to be paid when the beneficiary veteran dies. Thus, we can conclude that no relative of a deceased veteran could receive this help. However, a son or widower of a former soldier should contact the armed forces to find out if he is entitled to receive any other type of pension.

In some circumstances, you may lose your right to receive this help, even if your initial request is accepted. Check out the reasons below: you no longer meet the income criteria, the result of a review found that you are fit for work, you did not participate in the reviews or you refused to provide the requested information, in case fraud is found or in case it is verified that there was an error during the granting of your pension.

Indeed, there is no defined periodicity for reviewing your pension entitlement. However, the SASSA office will always give you three to months notice when a review will take place. In other cases, SASSA agents will indicate when the certificate of life must be delivered. If you receive your pension payments via wire transfer, you must go to a SASSA office to complete a certificate of living at least once a year.
